My Journey as a Mother

When Kids Love to Style their Hair

My daughter loves to style her hair, I’m glad she’s not like me in this. She loves clips, bands, hairstyles and tries different accessories when she finds one. The kids at her class have lovely hair and amazing hair styles. She likes to style and today the choices are aplenty. The difficult part in this is mine. I am not the one who knows many styles to try them on her. Well, I try to learn, but styling looks a bit complicated to me, but I try.

As a toddler we kept her hair mostly in summer cuts because she sweats a lot. You know Chennai weather, hot it is. So, we stuck to keeping it short until 5. Dance class changed things, she really wanted to start growing her hair sometime last year. So, we agreed and since then she’s trying to do all these hairstyles.

I am really sharing this for my memory later. It’s just beautiful how kids are clear on what they want. I’ve explained to my daughter that sometimes what I like she might not, and what she likes I might not, but the trick is in giving it the chance. I think when I said that it was mostly like explaining to myself that I need to try more things than advising her.

There are times I’ve said No without trying. I noticed that she started picking that up as well. So, I try my best to stick to say Yes most times now. True that’s easier, but saying YES has been helpful for me in many ways. I want to be open and try a few things rather than overthinking about it before it’s done.

She is now on her trip to India for her summer holidays with her dad. This is the first time in 6 years that I’m away from her. This is also the first time her dad is taking care of her full-time without me. It’s been an adventure as a family.

I miss her and all that, but I’m glad we decided to do this. That moment when we planned this my husband and I were freaking out. She cried and asked us to cancel the tickets, then came down to will you call me everyday amma to enjoy your time ma. All that has happened, but damn the house is silent and empty. I miss them, still it’s time for all of us to rejuvenate as well. I cannot think of not letting her enjoy her holidays because of my work. That felt selfish to keep her with me because of work while she could actually have fun with family back there.

Coming back to the Kids hair style

As I was going through a few photos and videos that she had recorded over time, I noticed these photos that we took of her hairstyles whenever we did one. I took these photos to show her if it was okay or if she needs it changed. All of them are there on my phone as memories now. Yes in a way it also shows how her hair has grown with time, but it reminds me of small memories that went along with each hairstyle.

The French Plait

My all-time favourite. This is the only hairstyle everyone ever wanted to try on my hair since school. I loved it on myself and on anyone who had it back then. It was the perfect hairstyle for my straight hair and made it look more beautiful. This is the one I tried wholeheartedly on her and also the only one I know. It’s one of the best hairstyles to do after a hair-bath. It’s so pretty on anyone who tries this. We went out that day and I couldn’t

Braided Half-tie

Naming it something we randomly called because I don’t know the name of this hairstyle. One of her friend had tried it on someone else’s hair and she came home and told me how she wanted it. She also told about this to one of her friend’s mum when she went there to play. She was kind enough to try it on her. So that’s how this came up. Tough for me especially when there’s just 5 minutes to leave the house and she’d say that she wanted that. Babe, you need to wake up early if you want this hairstyle, also it’s about hair washes darling.

South Indian – Plait with flowers

She got all dressed up during her vacation early this year and she was so happy about this. Never expected her to enjoy flowers this much. Glad that she liked it. Oiled hair, flowers and clips, wow, it reminded me of myself as a kid. I don’t get to see her like this much and that’s why I leave the elders in the family to dress her up because this definitely has its own charm.

Half-Tie Queen

This is called half-tie and it needs to be in the centre. It should never go to the sides, it has to be in the middle with little hair tied together and lots of hair left down. All in her words, this is one hairstyle where I’ve had to take many turns to get it right. This clip is my favourite and I used this when she turned 6. This was taken on her birthday party this year.

Ballet Bun

I learned this after watching videos on how to put the ballet bun for her dance show. This is what I managed to do without spray. I managed to only use a net with clips for the length she had during her dance show. We managed this hairstyle just a few months before, but it’s really one of the most cute and comfortable styles for the dance. I like it.

The all time humble ponytail

I totally loved how elegant this photo looked. This is from her trip now and she was fond of the flowers that she had kept them throughout the evening. When elders dress her up, I like it. She likes it more and I am surprised.

Finally, how can I not write about pigtails. Her school hairstyle before the summer holidays were regularly that or half-tie. Year 1 was exciting in many ways, but it’s been a year since she has started growing her hair. Not sure when she’s going to cut her hair next, but for now we can only enjoy it. A much relaxed hairstyle that never goes out of style is the free hair with a lovely hairband or a cute clip.

She is not very fond of getting her hair wet, but that’s also a reason why we kept the summer cut for her until 5. She is changing slowly, at times she cries during her hair-washes, but that’s okay right. After all the talks and trying to be bossy and all that, that’s the time I really feel, aww look at this one, just a little girl.

Which hairstyles does your kid like? Do you like to try new styles on them?

  1. And you said you weren’t good with hairstyles! Just look at the ones you’ve tried. I love them all. The ballet bun is so neat.
My daughter, a teen now, is also fond of trying out hairstyles. She has always loved long hair. When she was a kid, she would roam around wearing a paranda all the time. Also, she learnt to do the French braid herself, while I still cannot.

    1. You’re actually right, Tulika. Not bad I should say, now that I look at it, not bad at trying! 🙂 You are right, she used to wear a dupatta or a towel and used to ask me to pretend that was her long hair! 🙂 Wow, that’s a tough task and that’s exactly why it’s amazing. The magic it creates makes her forget the pain it causes in the twists of the hand I’m sure! 🙂

  2. Omg her clips are soooo cute. Did she pick them? Love the choices. I Actually love trying out new hairstyles. I would have loved to try some on her beautiful hair.
Seriously the young ones are so picky these days. And so sure about what they want. I wasn’t like that at all. The confidence and surety of what I wanted came many years later.
I am glad she is able to enjoy her vacation. A new experience of being away from mom. You take care.
